CCTV footage confirms that Terminal 1 was hit by an Iranian drone.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has categorically denied responsibility for a deadly strike on Kuwait International Airport, insisting that the extensive damage to a passenger terminal resulted from a malfunction in the US-made Patriot missile defense system rather than an Iranian attack.

According to Iranian state media, an IRGC spokesman stated that their investigation concluded the IRGC Aerospace Force did not target the civilian facility. Instead, he claimed a Patriot interceptor failed to engage incoming Iranian projectiles and struck the terminal.

“The destruction of the passenger terminal at Kuwait Airport was caused by an American Patriot system error after it failed to intercept Iranian missiles,” the spokesman said.

The incident occurred early on Wednesday amid a fresh round of exchanges between Iran and US-aligned forces. Kuwaiti authorities and multiple international outlets report that Iranian drones and missiles struck the airport, specifically Terminal 1, killing at least one person - an Indian national and injuring more than 60 others. Kuwait released surveillance footage appearing to show a drone impact on the terminal.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) strongly rejected Iran’s version of events, describing the Iranian claim as “totally false” and accusing Tehran of launching a “deliberate, calculated, and unjustified attack” on a civilian airport.

The strike came hours after reported US actions against Iran’s Qeshm Island, part of ongoing tit for tat military activity that has tested a fragile ceasefire in place since April or May 2026.

Some videos circulating online appear to show US Patriot interceptors failing during launches in Kuwait amid the Iranian barrage, with debris or failed missiles falling in surrounding areas. Many online observers and commentators have speculated that one such errant Patriot may have struck Kuwait International Airport.

These videos have fueled discussion on social media, with users pointing to the possibility of friendly fire or technical failure by the American-supplied system as the cause of the terminal damage.

Kuwait International Airport sustained significant structural damage, forcing a temporary suspension of all flights. Fires and smoke were visible in the terminal area following the blast. Kuwait condemned the attack and noted damage to diplomatic missions as well.

India expressed condolences over the death of its citizen and concern for injured nationals.

Analysts and social media observers have questioned Iran’s Patriot theory, noting that the trajectory and characteristics visible in footage appear more consistent with a drone strike than a falling missile interceptor.

This episode highlights the volatile security situation in the Gulf, where US-supplied Patriot systems are deployed across several countries, including Kuwait, to defend against Iranian ballistic missiles and drones. Accusations of friendly fire or system malfunctions have occasionally surfaced in past regional conflicts, but independent verification remains difficult in the current environment.

Oil prices rose nearly 2% on concerns that the unrest could disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

As investigations continue, the conflicting narratives highlight the challenges of verifying events in rapidly escalating conflicts. While Iran and supporters highlight alleged Patriot failures and circulating videos as evidence of their claims, Kuwait, the US, and much of the available footage point to direct Iranian responsibility.
