In the wake of the tragic murder of 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan in Ghaziabad’s Khoda Colony and the subsequent police encounter that killed the main accused, Asad, a video has gone viral on social media. Many users have claimed it shows Asad confessing to or boasting about the killing. This is false.

The clip depicts a young man speaking directly to the camera in what appears to be a casual, boastful tone, saying something along the lines of “Tumhare bhai ne murder maar diya hai” (Your brother has committed murder). In the context of the recent Ghaziabad case, where Surya was allegedly stabbed during a dispute reportedly linked to Eid celebrations and personal friction, many shared the video to suggest it was Asad taunting or confessing. This fueled online outrage, communal narratives, and misinformation.

The Truth: An Unrelated April 2026 Delhi Incident

Fact-checking organizations, including Alt News and NewsMeter, have traced the video back to early April 2026. It shows Karan Kumar, also known as Tarun, an 18-year-old from Delhi.

Key details of the actual incident:

▪️Date: Around April 2, 2026.

▪️Location: Shalimar Bagh area, North West Delhi, near the local police station.

▪️Victim: Nitesh, also known as Nikki, a 20-year-old.

▪️Circumstances: Karan and two accomplices (including a juvenile) allegedly stabbed Nitesh following a minor argument that escalated. Nitesh was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

▪️The Confession: Shortly after, Karan posted the video on his Instagram account under the handle ‘villain_dad_ok_109’, where he bragged about the act to his followers. He was arrested along with the others soon after.

This video misled readers on social media and was shared by some right-wing accounts.

The video matches reports from NDTV and other outlets from early April, including the distinctive phrasing and visuals. Reverse image searches and archival posts from Instagram confirm its origin two months before the Ghaziabad events.

High-profile crimes, especially those involving young victims or alleged communal angles like the Surya-Asad case, often lead to recycled or mismatched videos. The Ghaziabad incident (late May 2026) generated massive attention, with Asad killed in a police encounter on May 31. This created a perfect storm for old content to be repurposed, amplifying tensions and false narratives.

Fact-checkers have consistently clarified that the man in the video is Karan Kumar, not Asad. No credible link exists between the two cases.

Lessons from This Case

▪️Verify before sharing: Reverse image searches, checking upload dates, and cross-referencing with reputable news sources can prevent the spread of old clips.

▪️Impact of misinformation: False attributions can heighten communal divides, distract from actual investigations, and cause unnecessary distress to families involved in both incidents.

▪️Youth crime trend: Both cases highlight concerns over rising violence among teenagers in Delhi-NCR, including easy access to weapons and the role of social media in boasting about crimes.

This serves as a reminder that in the age of rapid information sharing, context and verification are essential. The Delhi April 2026 stabbing was a separate tragedy, unrelated to the Ghaziabad murder that has dominated recent headlines.
