A massive explosion at an explosives warehouse in the town of Namkham, located in northern Myanmar’s Shan State, has killed at least 55 people and injured more than 60 others, according to local reports and emergency responders.

The powerful blast occurred late in the evening and was reportedly heard from several kilometers away. Thick clouds of smoke rose into the sky as nearby buildings collapsed or caught fire following the explosion.

Witnesses described scenes of panic and destruction as emergency teams rushed to the area to search for survivors trapped under debris. Several homes and nearby shops were heavily damaged due to the intensity of the blast.

Namkham is located very close to the border with China, specifically near China’s Yunnan Province.

Local authorities stated that the explosion took place inside a warehouse believed to be storing large quantities of explosives and ammunition. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation, though officials suspect that mishandling of explosive materials or an accidental fire may have triggered the disaster.

Hospitals in the region have reportedly been overwhelmed with injured victims, many suffering from severe burns and blast-related injuries. Rescue operations continued through the night as firefighters attempted to control fires spreading across the surrounding area.

Namkham is located near Myanmar’s conflict-prone border region, where armed clashes between military forces and ethnic armed groups have intensified in recent years. Due to ongoing instability in the region, warehouses containing explosives and military supplies are often considered high-risk locations.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of all victims, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue clearing the rubble.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety and storage of explosive materials in conflict zones across Myanmar.
