Indian border security forces detained a 36-year-old American national identified as Jordan Brown from California near the Sonauli border crossing with Nepal. The incident occurred on July 11, 2026, when Brown was allegedly attempting to cross into Nepal via an unauthorized foot trail without any passport, visa, or other identity documents.

According to reports, personnel from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), India’s border guarding force responsible for the India-Nepal frontier, intercepted Brown during a routine patrol near border pillar 516. He reportedly tried to flee toward the Nepali side but was apprehended with the help of local villagers. Authorities seized items including approximately ₹31,460 in cash, mobile phones, and other personal belongings.

Brown provided conflicting accounts during initial questioning about his travel history, identity, and purpose for visiting Nepal. He claimed to have lost his passport in Thailand and stated that he had entered India illegally earlier—accounts varied between arriving by sea from Sri Lanka in November 2025 or more recently via Bali, Indonesia, in May 2026. He reportedly spent time in Goa and other locations before heading north.

Brown asserted a background in the US military, telling investigators he studied at the University of California and served in the US Navy and Special Forces for about six years before separating from service roughly two years ago (around 2024). He also mentioned having traveled to nearly 70 countries and that both his parents had passed away.

Indian authorities have registered a case under the Immigration and Foreigners Act. Security agencies are actively verifying his identity, claimed military service, travel movements within India including an alleged eight-month stay, and the authenticity of his statements. No espionage links have been confirmed at this stage.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the sensitive nature of the India-Nepal border and Brown’s self-proclaimed elite military background. Similar incidents involving foreign nationals at Indian borders have occurred in the past, often involving documentation issues or overstays. Officials continue to investigate how Brown entered and resided in India without proper papers for an extended period.

This developing story highlights ongoing border security challenges in the region. Updates are expected as the verification process progresses.
